Chapter XXIIIYour Diet Before and After SurgeryDiet is important all through life. However, a balanced diet is especially important before liposuction. After liposuction surgery has been performed, you need to follow a specific diet that relates to fat cells.
PRE-LIPOSUCTION DIETING Why? The reasons include benefits to your nutrition, immunity, hydration, electrolyte balance (sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium) for proper condition of muscles and nerves, blood cells, and bones. Proper nutrition also improves coagulation and diminishes the possibilities of easy bruisability.
PRE-LIPOSUCTION DIET IN A NUTSHELL "This diet is good for you."
This diet has been specifically designed to prepare your body for the additional stresses of surgery. Stress can increase your body's need for certain vitamins and minerals, because it can depress the immune system, cause fatigue, and retard healing processes. By following this diet plan, you will be better prepared to handle the stress of surgery. This diet promotes rapid recovery. Because this diet is nutritionally excellent, you will receive many other benefits. I formulated this diet with specialty liposuction surgery in mind. The diet is high in the following Anti-Stress Nutrients: iron, zinc, Vitamin C, and all the B vitamins.
* Iron is necessary for the production of red blood cells, growth, prevention of fatigue, iron-deficiency anemia, and good skin tone. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption (while excess of 3 cups of coffee or tea inhibits iron absorption).
* Vitamin C also improves the rate of healing of your body-especially of the small blood vessels. It is an antioxidant. Hence, it helps the body to eliminate toxins. Vitamin C fights bacterial infections, protects against the effects of allergies. It is necessary for the formation and repair of collagen, and lowers incidence of blood clots in veins. In capillaries (tiny blood vessels), Vitamin C improves circulation and promotes healing.
* Zinc accelerates the healing time of internal and external wounds, and promotes growth and repair of tissues. It improves mental alertness, and decreases the rate at which cholesterol is deposited. Most of all, it improves utilization and the metabolism (burning) of fat.
* B-Complex includes all B vitamins. They promote tissue repair. These B vitamins keep your nervous system functioning normally, as natural pain relief. These vitamins are also important for avoidance and treatment of depression or anxiety. They promote healthy skin, nails, and blood vessels. The B vitamins also help circulation and reduce water retention.
In addition, this Pre-Liposuction Diet contains all the essential and nonessential amino acids, as well as all the important vitamins and minerals. They are:
* Vitamins. Vitamin A, Thiamine (Bi), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), Pyridoxine (Br,), Folic Acid, Vitamin B12), Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Choline, Inositol, PABA, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin K, Vitamin E.
* Minerals. Calcium, Chromium, Copper, Fluorine, Iodine, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Molybdenum, Phosphorus, Potassium, Selenium, Zinc, Vanadium.
The chart that follows will serve as a handy guide to help you maximize the benefits of good nutrition. Broiling, grilling, and microwaving are the best ways to cook foods without destoying their nutruients.
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS There are many ways of achieving good nutrition. This is BEFORE SURGERY the best way we have found at The Liposuction Institute after treating thousands of patients.
* Multivitamin-Mineral supplement. "COMPLETE" is the brand name we use. After extensive research of the medical market for a pre- and post-surgical complete vitamin/mineral combination, we could not find one which was formulated with the specific needs of surgery, immunity, and post-surgical convalescence in mind. Consequently, we formulated our own "COMPLETE". It is available through Forrester Laboratories, P.O. Box 1906, Arlington Heights, Illinois 60006.
* Hematinics. These are supplements which enhance your bone marrow and your iron stores. We use the brand AHEMOPLEX@, also from Forrester Laboratories.
* Calcium-Vitamin D. For your skeletal system, nerves, and muscles. You will need this supplement especially after the surgery. We use the brand "OSTEO-CAL," made by Forrester Laboratories.
* VitaminK1. We use the brand "Synkavite." Vitamin K helps coagulation system to prevent bruising and bleeding, and assure good clotting capability.
SAMPLE MENU BEFORE LIPOSUCTION Good nutrition, supplied by balanced meals, is an important part of your preparation for surgery.
BREAKFAST Good choices are cereal (any kind) with skim milk, fruits; eggs; toast or bagel.
LUNCH Salad, vegetable, meat of any kind such as beef, poultry, seafoods.
DINNER Salad; vegetable, white green; meat of any type.
SNACK Cheeses, yogurt, granola bar. Fruits are good snacks.
DO'S AND DONT'S
Do's !
* Do eat a wide variety of foods. * Do eat dairy products or milk. At least one tall glass per day is a must. * Do eat meats such as beef, lamb, poultry. Eat at least 1/2 pound per day.
Don'ts !
* Don't eat a monotonous diet. Do not eat the same food for too many days.
* Don't use much alcohol. Limit yourself to one drink per day, or one glass of wine, or one beer. Definitely no alcohol for at least 24 hours before surgery.
* Don't use recreational drugs.
* Don't use medications containing aspirin or anti- inflammatory medications, beginning one month prior to surgery. (Read labels of over- the-counter medications, and ask your doctor or pharmacist.)
* Don't take high doses of Vitamin E-especially any over 200 mg.
* Don't take garlic pills. They have a tendency to thin blood, and to lead to excessive bruising.
POST-LIPOSUCTION DIET Why? After liposuction surgery to remove fat cells, you need to reduce some substances in your body, while increasing others.
Specifically, you want to decrease triglycerides; decrease LDL (low density lipoproteins); decrease VLDL (very low density lipoproteins). At the same time, you want to increase your body's metabolism; increase HDL (high density lipoproteins); increase lipolysis (your body=s ability to burn fat); increase immunity; and avoid fatigue. You also want to diminish edema (water retention after surgery) and to diminish bruisability.
It is extremely important for you to take prescribed nutritional supplements while you are on this diet. You will want to discuss the diet and the supplements he or she wishes you to have with your liposuction surgeon. We also prescribe three additional medications: "METABOLIC-1," "METABOLIC-2," and "METABOLIC-3." All help to increase the body's metabolism. They are available from Forrester Laboratories.
SPECIAL SUPPLEMENTS At The Liposuction Institute, we prescribe the metabolic medication to be taken for six months after surgery. You need to eliminate any remaining excess fat from your body as quickly as possible.
I believe the best way to do this is to follow the special post-lipsuction diet, while at the same time increasing the body=s metabolism and lipolysis (body's ability to burn fat). The three special metabolic supplements help to accomplish this..

WHAT TO EAT FROM THE 2nd THROUGH 7th WEEKS AFTER SURGERY For the next six weeks, your diet must be low fat, high complex carbohydrate (fruit, vegetables), moderate protein which should be white meats such as poultry and sea foods. Below is a list of the foods you may choose and those you ought to avoid for at least six weeks.
This list is followed by a sample menu for those who do not need to lose weight, those who have 25 pound or less to lose, and a sample menu program for those who have more than 25 pounds to lose.
You and your surgeon will have been in close contact throughout your liposuction operation and follow-up. Because of her or his background and training, your doctor can advise you regarding eventual "desired weight." If he or she feels you still have weight to lose, do it now. Let the "new flgure" you have gained from liposuction be your incentive to continue.
Liposuction can take you only so far-it cannot do the whole job if you do not watch your eating habits. However, with the help of your surgeon, and with the principles set forth in this book, you have the tools with which to succeed. Use them.Use them.

WHAT COMES NEXT? If you have followed the dietcopyright-dr.leon tcheupdjian/liposuction for a total of seven weeks after weeks after surgery, and if you have faithfully done the exercises recommended for the particular area of the body on which you have had liposuction performed, you should notice a substantial change in your appearance.
Liposuction has helped by removing the fat cells. Exercise has toned your muscles, helping to define them and contributing to your overall appearance. The diet that is appropriate for you-along with the supplements prescribed for you-has given you good nutrition and has been an important part of your successful convalescence.
If your liposuction surgeon has a comprehensive follow-up program, you should take full advantage of any counseling or services he or she can offer. You will also find suggestions in the following chapter for continuing your plans for "self-improvement." It is vital-indeed, crucial-that you pay constant attention to your weight and exercise if you are to gain the most from liposuction. This is true, not only in the weeks ahead, but for the rest of your life. You cannot afford to be complacent about your "new" figure if you want to continue to look your best.
A surgeon with a comprehensive program can supervise a maintenance diet for you or refer you to an appropriate health care professional who will do so. You can locate a physician who specializes in the treatment of obesity by writing or calling the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, 7430 E. Caley Avenue, Suite 210, Englewood, Colorado 80111, Tel. 303-779-4833. If you are still overweight at this point, or have a binging or eating problem, it is important for you to continue medical treatment, preferably with a physician who is a member or diplomats of this society.Previous Chapter | Next Chapter |
